Looking and Feeling Your Best

IMG_4844For me, part of self-care has been spending time on myself each day to look and feel my best – which can be quite challenging with little ones!  Somewhere along the way in my motherhood journey, I stopped caring quite as much about hair, makeup, fashion and working out.  It wasn’t that I let myself go, but I just couldn’t muster up the time or energy once my second baby arrived.  I found myself in my ‘mom uniform’ of yoga pants and a tee pretty much every day with little to no makeup.

I have discovered that if I get ready for the day and put together somewhat of an outfit I really do feel so much better about myself.  I mean, don’t ask me what I look like by day’s end – that’s a different story!  I sometimes feel bad my husband only sees the exhausted, worn-down, smudged makeup, totally frazzled looks – haha.

For anyone wondering how to make this a part of your daily routine – my advice is to start small.  And find something to occupy the kids when you do it.  Depending on the age of your children, this can be hard.  When my youngest was a baby, I wore him in the Ergo oftentimes just to get the job done.  Each day, I do the same thing with my kids while I’m getting ready, so that it has become routine for us.  My 4-year-old typically stays downstairs to play or finish up her show and my youngest comes upstairs and plays with cars or books while I’m getting ready.  Of course, every day does not go this smoothly – trust me, I have interruptions constantly!  But I have learned to move really fast when I see that they’re occupied.

Even if it’s just managing to throw on some BB cream, blush, bronzer, and mascara, I feel better than being out and about bare-faced.  Keep lip gloss in the car or in your purse and you can put it on as you’re leaving.

Another tip I have for you is to find some fun beauty and fashion bloggers to follow.  One of my closest girlfriends turned me onto the Maskcara makeup blog run by Cara Brook.  I get most of my beauty tips from her.  Besides being incredibly endearing, she is beautiful and really makes you trust all of her recommendations.  This blog post is a must if you’re doing portraits anytime soon – I make sure to re-read her photo makeup tips anytime we are doing our family pics.  I also love her youtube videos!

I also love MM and L show on youtube.  You may recognize Michelle Money from The Bachelor on ABC.  She and her best friend Laura are super informative, stylish and, as a bonus, pretty hilarious!  From how to curl your hair to how to pack for a trip, Michelle and Laura cover it all.  If you watch one video, be prepared to watch a whole slew of them…they’re completely addicting!

I enjoyed this one on their “empties” – products they keep buying.  Just have a pen in hand because you will want to write down every single thing!

I also love Andee Layne’s blog.  She is adorable, down to earth and posts things like Forever 21 Fridays for budget-friendly finds.

I also recommend looking on Instagram for fashion bloggers to follow so you can keep up with the latest trends.  I constantly look to them because I want to know what’s fashionable but since it’s just quick pictures, it doesn’t take long.  And with the addition of LiketoKnowit, it’s easy to get the details emailed so you can purchase the items you’re interested in.

I’m just realizing that this is self care for me too, that it’s not just getting out by myself once in a while but that it’s looking my ” best” (and what I mean by that is out of yoga pants and wearing contacts instead of glasses lol) to help me feel my best…everyday. I’ve recently become obsessed with The Mom Edit and One Little Momma blogs for fashion/makeup tips.
